What Would YOU Ask Elena Kagan?

Elena Kagan continues to make the rounds on Capitol Hill to lobby for her confirmation this summer. She’s met with several Democrats and some swing Senate Republicans in the days after her nomination. While Kagan lobbies, Senators get a chance to ask her questions before the formal confirmation hearings with the Judiciary Committee. But what if you were a Senator for one day, what question would you ask Elena Kagan?

DC Metro Record Fare Hike Coming?

The decision has been put off for a couple weeks, but Washington’s Metropolitan Area Transit Authority will be raising rates to close a $189 million dollar budget shortfall. The only questions are which fares go up and by how much. WTOP’s Ari Ashe got reaction to some of these proposals from listeners.

Are Children More Violent Today Than Ever Before?

There have been several acts of violence lately involving teens or young adults. Alonte Sutton was killed over the weekend, and then UVA lacrosse star Yeardley Love last week. Fellow student-athlete George Huguely is charged in the Love case.

Back in April 15th, DC Shaw Middle School Principal Brian Betts was murdered in his home. Among those charged are three 18-year-olds: Sharif T. Lancaster, Alante Saunders and Deontra Q. Gray.

On March 30th, there was a drive-by shooting on South Capitol Street, killing four. Among those charged are Orlando Carter, 20, Robert Bost, 22, Jeffrey D. Best, 21, and Lamar Williams, 22.

TALKBACK: So do you think children are more violent today than ever before or is it just getting more attention now?

POTUS Nominates Elena Kagan, What Happens Now?

President Obama has nominated Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. Now comes the “getting to know you” phase, in which Kagan will visit key Senators and answer questions about her background and personal opinions on key legal issues. This process will take several weeks and lead up to Senate Judiciary Committee hearings this summer. I spoke with Michael O’Neill, Professor of Law at George Mason University and the former Senate Judiciary Chief Counsel and Staff Director during the Samuel Alito and John Roberts hearings in 2006. O’Neill told me what happens in the days after the nomination inside the halls of the US Senate.

PRODUCERS HAT: An A+ producer has plenty of resources and prepares for these events ahead of time. I posted an article about how to prepare and I hope you did! We spoke to Thomas Goldstein, who publishes SCOTUSBlog and is a partner at Akin-Gump (a DC Law firm). He’s very good at analyzing Supreme Court news and he spoke with WTOP’s Dimitri Sotis.

DC Teachers Contract Close to Completion

After several weeks of back and forth, DC officials say they’ve found a way to pay for a $140 million deal with city teachers. The contract appeared to be in trouble last month when DC Chief Financial Officer Natwar M. Gandhi refused to ratify the contract until Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee raised nearly $64 million in public money. Until now, the Mayor had come up $10.7 million short. Fenty, Rhee and Gandhi say they’ve devised a $38.8 million package of budget cuts to close the funding gap in the contract.

Gandhi wouldn’t ratify the previous contract because much of the money was from private contributions, which had several conditions that seemed too onerous. About half of the package will come from federal funds and the rest will come from school programs such as after-school programs, and a math intervention program for the middle schools. The deal, if approved, would give DC teachers a 20-percent raise over the next five years.

Take a listen to my reports and let me know what you think!

A Former Solicitor General Weighs in on Elena Kagan Nomination

President Obama has chosen Elena Kagan as his Supreme Court nominee. If she were to be confirmed, she’d be the fifth former Solicitor General to later join the Court. The list includes Robert H. Jackson, Stanley Forman Reed, William Howard Taft and Thurgood Marshall.

Several experts note that if Mrs. Kagan were to be confirmed, she’d likely have to recuse herself from more than a dozen cases in the fall because of her work as Solicitor General. Thurgood Marshall had to recuse himself from about 57-percent of cases in his first year on the court.

Virginia School District Extending School Day 10 Minutes

Remember all the school days that were cancelled during the December and February blizzards? Several school systems lost weeks worth of classes, making it difficult to reach the legally required instructional hours per year. And while some school districts received exemptions, Prince William has another plan.

Take a listen, and give me any feedback you might have!

Does New York’s Times Square Plot Make You Nervous To Visit DC’s Monuments?

Snatched off a plane heading from New York to Dubai, a Pakistan-born man admitted to rigging an SUV with a homemade device to explode in Times Square, federal official say.

Faisal Shahzad, a naturalized U.S. citizen living in Connecticut, spent five months in Pakistan, before returning home to build a crude gasoline and propane bomb, which officials say he tried to blow up in the middle of a busy Saturday evening.

Shahzad has been charged with terrorism and using weapons of mass destruction, after being hauled off a flight at Kennedy Airport on Monday night. He was on the federal no-fly list.

Customs and Border Protection agents were on the lookout for Shahzad, and they recognized his name on a passenger manifest and ordered the flight stopped so they could arrest him.

“Based on what we know so far, it is clear that this was a terrorist plot aimed at murdering Americans in one of the busiest places in our country,” Attorney General Eric Holder said.

WTOP TALKBACK: If New York City is terror target number 1 in our country, Washington DC probably is 1A. So do this failed terror plot using a car bomb make you more nervous about visiting our tourist attractions?

Listen to my reports and let me know what you think!
